Letters of Medical Necessity, or LMNs, are similar to doctor’s notes in that they are issues by a medical provider to explain why a certain product or service qualifies to be HSA/FSA eligible due to medical necessity for an individual. LMNs qualify that an expense is required in order to diagnose, treat, or alleviate a medical symptom rather than simply being used for general wellness purposes.

Products that have the ability to treat, cure, alleviate, diagnose, or prevent a medical condition may be eligible for purchase using HSA/FSA funds. Some items, such as bandages or other similar items, are always eligible because they serve a strictly medical purpose. Goods or services that can also be used for general wellness purposes, such as massage therapy or vitamin supplements, may be eligible if recommended by a healthcare professional. Because the Visionbody EMS home system has general wellness benefits as well as medical applications, a Letter of Medical Necessity is needed to qualify your purchase.

Getting an LMN requires just a few easy steps, starting with a call to your doctor.

  • Speak to a certified healthcare provider to determine if you qualify for an LMN
  • Complete any necessary intake forms
  • Once you have your LMN, return to the Visionbody website and shop as you normally would. During checkout, simply select the Sika payment method to utilize your HSA/FSA funds.

Sika’s healthcare provider team aims to keep response times within 12 business hours after you submit your LMN intake forms, although exact timeframe may vary slightly.

Similar to other telehealth providers, Sika will ask you to share your name, contact information, date of birth, information about the symptoms you are experiencing, and your medical history to see if you are eligible for a Letter of Medical Necessity. You will also need to verify your phone number and upload a photo ID for identity verification. 

The information you provide in the LMN process will be kept confidential and shared only with Sika’s healthcare providers to determine your eligibility for an LMN. For more information, see Sika’s privacy policy.

Once your Letter of Medical Necessity is approved, making a purchase is simple. Shop our site as you normally would, and then at checkout, select Sika as your checkout method using the same email you applied for your LMN with.

If you do not have your HSA/FSA card on hand, you can make your purchase using a debit or credit card and apply to your administrator for reimbursement. After checkout, you will receive a receipt and your LMN. You can then upload your receipt and LMN to your HSA/FSA administrator’s website to request your reimbursement.

Letters of Medical Necessity are valid for 12 months from the day they are written and signed.

After you complete a purchase using an LMN, you will need to submit your Letter of Medical Necessity and your receipt to substantiate the purchase if you paid with your HSA/FSA or to get reimbursed if you paid with your credit/debit card. To do this:

  • Log into your HSA/FSA account on your benefit administrator’s website 
  • Find the Reimbursement or Claims section 
  • Upload your receipt and Letter of Medical Necessity

Your administrator will process and evaluate your claim. Please note that some HSA/FSA benefits administrators may incorrectly deny reimbursement, so before purchasing a product with an LMN you should consider contacting your administrator to determine if your purchases will be covered/reimbursed.
